Dog Dragging Its Butt Across the Floor? Understanding the Causes of Scooting

The most common reason dogs drag their bottom across the floor—a behavior known as scooting—is an inflamed anal gland.

What Are Anal Glands?

Anal glands are small sacs located just below a dog’s tail that collect fluid from the body. Historically, the passage of bulky feces during regular bowel movements would naturally press against the anal sacs, squeezing out the waste liquid during elimination.

However, modern pet foods are absorbed more completely by dogs, resulting in smaller stools. Because these stools don't always press against the sacs naturally, the anal sacs often fail to empty on their own. Over time, they become over-full and periodically require human assistance to "express" or squeeze out the fluid.

Because this liquid is exceptionally putrid, it is usually best left to a professional.

Other Causes of Dog Scooting

While anal gland issues are the primary culprit, dogs may also scoot due to itchiness or irritation caused by:

  • Fleas

  • Ringworm

  • Food allergies

When to See a Veterinarian

If your dog starts scooting, always check the area for swelling, lumps, or bleeding. These signs can point to a more serious medical condition requiring immediate veterinary attention.

Pairing regular grooming maintenance with annual veterinary checkups is the best way to catch problems early, keep your pet safe, and practice preventive healthcare.
